  1. Yugi Muto

    The main protagonist of the original series along with Yami Yugi, who holds the title "King of Games" together with the spirit of Pharaoh Atem. He is said to be the modern-day version of the Pharaoh.

  2. Seto Kaiba

    One of the anime's main characters, the older brother of Mokuba and the reincarnation of Priest Seto, the original keeper of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. He heads KaibaCorp, the world's largest gaming conglomerate.

  3. Joey Wheeler

    Called Katsuya Jonouchi in the Japanese version, Yugi's best friend. He starts out as an inexperienced Duelist, but later becomes one of the greatest Duelists in the world.

  4. Tea Gardner

    Known as Anzu Mazaki in Japan, one of Yugi's best friends. She does not usually play games with Yugi and friends, though she can beat Joey early on, and she is very good at dancing.

  5. Tristan Taylor

    Known as Hiroto Honda in the Japanese version, a student in class 1-B at Domino High School and a friend of Yugi, Joey, Téa and Bakura. Kazuki Takahashi oversaw his character design.

  6. Bakura

    The name covers several characters: Bakura Ryou, a boy who holds the Millennium Ring, Yami Bakura, the spirit of the Ring who possesses him, and Bandit King Bakura, a survivor of the Kul Elna massacre.

  7. Marik Ishtar

    The leader and founder of the Rare Hunters, younger brother of Ishizu and adoptive younger brother of Odion, and the heir to the Tomb Keepers. He was the main antagonist of the Battle City arc.

    Known as Pegasus J. Crawford in Japan, the president of Industrial Illusions and the creator of Duel Monsters. He wanted to be an artist before becoming obsessed with Egypt.

  9. Mai Valentine

    Called Mai Kujaku in the manga and Japanese anime, a recurring supporting character with purple eyes and long, spiky blonde hair. She wears large silver hoop earrings.

  10. Mokuba Kaiba

    Seto Kaiba's younger brother and the only person Kaiba ever shows any love or affection to. He is a recurring character, with tan skin, grayish-purple eyes and long black hair.

    Known as Ryuji Otogi in Japan, the creator of the game Dungeon Dice Monsters. He owns the "Black Clown" game shop, which rivals Solomon Muto's Kame Game.

  12. Rex Raptor

    Known as Dinosaur Ryuzaki in Japan, a Dinosaur Duelist introduced as powerful. After losing to Joey Wheeler he becomes a source of humiliation, together with Weevil, and starts considering Joey a rival.

  13. Weevil Underwood

    Known as Insector Haga in Japan, the former Japan champion who becomes a rival and grows jealous of Yugi. He adores insects, so his Deck is based on Insect-Type monsters.

  14. Ishizu Ishtar

    A character whose name derives from the Egyptian goddess Isis and the Mesopotamian deity Ishtar. She is the modern-day version of Priestess Isis, and is sometimes called Isis Ishtar by fans.

  15. Odion

    Known as Rishid in Japan, the adoptive older brother of Marik and Ishizu Ishtar. He remains loyal to Marik throughout the series, even when mistreated, and wears golden ankh-like earrings.

  16. Dark Magician

    A Level 7 Spellcaster monster with 2500 ATK and 2100 DEF, and Yugi's signature monster in the original series. It is one of the most recognizable cards in the game.

  17. Blue-Eyes White Dragon

    A Level 8 Dragon with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF, tied to Seto Kaiba. In the story, Priest Seto was the original keeper of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon.

    Exodia the Forbidden One is the head piece of a five-card set. Holding the head and all four limbs in hand at once wins the Duel on the spot, which is why it is so iconic.

Yu-Gi-Oh! tier list questions

What are the Japanese names on this list?

Several characters have different names in the Japanese version, such as Joey Wheeler as Katsuya Jonouchi, Téa Gardner as Anzu Mazaki and Tristan Taylor as Hiroto Honda. The write-ups note them.

Why are cards on a character list?

Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Exodia are so closely tied to their duelists that fans often rank them together with the characters. You can remove them from your tier list if you prefer.

How should I rank Yu-Gi-Oh! characters?

Common criteria include dueling skill, story role, personality, rivalry and favorite arcs. Many fans rank heroes, rivals and villains separately, since they play such different roles.
