Warrior
A melee fighter highly trained in weaponry who relies on heavy plate armor, shields and battle prowess. Rage grows as they deal or take damage, and they can wield huge two-handed weapons or two weapons.

Paladin
A holy knight and hybrid class that can heal, tank or deal damage through its Holy, Protection and Retribution roles. Paladins stand in front of their enemies, relying on heavy armor and healing to survive.

Hunter
A damage-dealing class that fights at range or in melee, using shots, traps and misdirection. Marksmen use a wide range of shots, while melee hunters fight with polearms and are skilled at throwing their weapon.

Rogue
A lightly armored melee damage class cast as an elite assassin, sneaky pickpocket or waylaying bandit. Rogues often start fights with a surprise attack from the shadows, followed by vicious melee strikes.

Priest
The master of healing and preservation, who restores wounded allies, shields them and even resurrects the fallen. Priests also cast powerful offensive spells from a distance, but are frail and lightly armored.

Shaman
A mortal mediator between the elements and a hybrid class able to specialize in offensive spellcasting, melee damage or healing. Shaman are considered highly adaptable and versatile, and are often spiritual guides.

Mage
A damage-dealing spellcaster that specializes in burst damage and area-of-effect spells. Mages are known for their formidable output and crowd control, and can conjure refreshments or open portals to major cities.

Warlock
A damage-dealing spellcaster known for a wide range of debuffs and damage-over-time effects. Warlocks study darker magics such as fel and destructive spells, and many follow the Burning Legion, though some oppose it.

Druid
A shapeshifting hybrid class that can tank, heal or deal damage by using its shapeshift forms. A druid is most effective in the role of its active specialization, but can switch roles temporarily.

Death Knight
A melee fighter who wields dark magic and runeforged weapons, and the first hero class of World of Warcraft, introduced in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. The class dates back to Warcraft II.

Monk
A hybrid class introduced with the Mists of Pandaria expansion. Brewmaster monks tank, Mistweavers heal and Windwalkers deal damage with melee abilities, and every race except Dracthyr can play one.

Demon Hunter
A disciple of Illidan Stormrage who embraces fel and chaotic magic to challenge the Burning Legion. They wield the powers of demons they have slain and develop demonic features that frighten fellow elves.

Evoker
A mail-wearing hero class introduced by Dragonflight and available only to the dracthyr race. Evokers are casters who use the power of the dragonflights, such as the red and blue, in their spells.

How current are the class descriptions?
The write-ups describe each class's identity and fantasy, which change little between patches. Balance and specializations change often, so check the official game site if you rank by current strength.
Which classes were added after the original game?
The Death Knight arrived with Wrath of the Lich King, the Monk with Mists of Pandaria, the Demon Hunter with Legion and the Evoker with Dragonflight, which is the only race-locked class.
How should I rank World of Warcraft classes?
Common criteria include fantasy, playstyle, roles, lore and how much fun a class is to play. Many players rank by their own favorite role, such as tank, healer or damage dealer.
