  1. Generation 1 (Kanto)

    The original generation, set in Kanto with 151 species introduced across Red, Blue and Yellow. It established the original fifteen types, starting with Normal, Fire, Water and Grass, and launched in 1996.

  2. Generation 2 (Johto)

    Gold, Silver and Crystal, set in Johto, added 100 new species and two new types, Steel and Dark. The Game Boy Color games were released in Japan on November 21, 1999.

  3. Generation 3 (Hoenn)

    Set in Hoenn, with 135 new species across Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. The Game Boy Advance games began the generation in 2002, and FireRed and LeafGreen remade the Kanto games.

  4. Generation 4 (Sinnoh)

    Set in Sinnoh with 107 new species, starting with Diamond and Pearl on the Nintendo DS in 2006. Platinum followed, then HeartGold and SoulSilver remade the Johto games in 2009.

    Set in Unova with 156 new species, the largest group of new Pokémon, across Black and White in 2010 and Black 2 and White 2 in 2012.

  6. Generation 6 (Kalos)

    Set in Kalos with 72 new species, the smallest generation by new Pokémon. It added the Fairy type, and Pokémon X and Y were the first games to have a simultaneous global release.

    Set in Alola with 88 new species, starting with Sun and Moon on the Nintendo 3DS on 18 November 2016, the franchise's 20th anniversary. Let's Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! are grouped here too.

    Set in Galar with 96 new species, starting with Sword and Shield on the Switch on 15 November 2019. It also includes Legends: Arceus and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Pokémon Generations (Gen 1-9) tier list questions

How many Pokémon generations are there?

There are nine generations so far, from Generation 1 in Kanto to Generation 9 in Paldea. Each one introduces a new region, a new set of Pokémon and usually a new pair of main games.

Which generation added the most new Pokémon?

Generation 5, set in Unova, added 156 new Pokémon, the most of any generation in PokéAPI's data. Generation 6, set in Kalos, added the fewest, with 72 new species.

How should I rank Pokémon generations?

Common criteria include the Pokémon designs, region, games, story, music and nostalgia. Many fans rank by the starters or by the games of each generation, since that is what defines the generation for them.
