Aang
The Air Nomad Avatar who succeeded Avatar Roku and preceded Avatar Korra. During the Hundred Year War he was the only person able to use all four bending arts: air, water, earth and fire.

Katara
A waterbending master born in the Southern Water Tribe to Chief Hakoda and Kya. As a child she was one of the last waterbenders in the tribe, after losing her mother in a Fire Nation raid.

Sokka
A Southern Water Tribe warrior, the son of Chief Hakoda and Kya. After his mother's death and his father's departure for war, his grandmother Kanna raised him with his younger sister Katara.

Toph
An earthbending master, one of the most powerful of her time, and the discoverer of metalbending. Blind since birth, she was often treated condescendingly, especially by her overprotective parents, Lao and Poppy Beifong.

Zuko
A Fire Nation royal and firebending master who reigned as Fire Lord from 100 AG until his abdication in 167 AG. He was the eldest child of Ozai and Ursa, and began as the primary enemy of Team Avatar.

Iroh
A retired Fire Nation general, former Crown Prince and Grand Lotus of the Order of the White Lotus. His firebreathing and claim of "slaying" the last dragon earned him the title "The Dragon of the West."

Azula
A Fire Nation princess, daughter of Ozai and Ursa and younger sister of Zuko. She was a key adversary of Team Avatar, chasing Aang and her banished brother across the Earth Kingdom with Mai and Ty Lee.

Appa
Aang's loyal sky bison, who shared a strong bond with him and Momo as the last traces of the Air Nomad civilization. He flies despite his heavy weight through airbending, and was Team Avatar's main transport.

Momo
A winged lemur and loyal companion of Aang. By late 99 AG he lived at the Southern Air Temple, and he was the only known winged lemur still alive after the Air Nomad genocide.

Suki
The leader of one of the Kyoshi Warrior bands on the Earth Kingdom's Kyoshi Island, who began training at age eight. Imprisoned at the Boiling Rock, she planned to build community among the prisoners.

Ozai
Fire Lord from 95 to 100 AG, who ruled during the final years of the Hundred Year War. A firebending master believed to be the most powerful firebender in the world, he usurped his brother's birthright after Lu Ten died.

Ty Lee
A cheerful, energetic girl from the Fire Nation who attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls with Azula and Mai. In prison, she taught the Kyoshi Warriors chi-blocking, and they let her join them.

Mai
The daughter of Ukano, former governor of New Ozai, and his wife Michi. A privileged Fire Nation girl who attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, she became Zuko's romantic partner upon his return.

Does this list include The Legend of Korra?
No. The write-ups cover characters from the original animated series. Aang is described as the Avatar who preceded Avatar Korra, but Korra and her friends are not part of this list.
