    FIFA recognizes Uruguay as two-time world champions, allowing two stars on the shirt. They won the first World Cup in 1930 and played Spain in the group stage of 2026.

    Competed seven times, finishing on the podium on three occasions. Croatia's best result is runner-up in 2018, where they lost the final 4–2 to France.

    Appeared in the finals on 15 occasions, including the very first World Cup match in 1930. Belgium's best finish is third place at the 2018 tournament in Russia.

    Has competed since the inaugural 1930 tournament and became the first country to host the World Cup three times, in 1970, 1986 and 2026. Since a quarter-final in 1986 it has not gone beyond the round of 16.

    Reached the semifinals in the 1930 World Cup, later declared a third-place finish, the best-ever result for a non-European, non-South American nation. The US hosted again in 2026.

    Qualified four times, in 2002, 2018, 2022 and 2026. They reached the quarter-finals on their 2002 debut, where they helped knock out defending champions France in the group stage.

  20. Colombia

    Has appeared seven times, in 1962, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2014, 2018 and 2026. At Chile 1962 it drew 4–4 with the Soviet Union, one of the biggest shocks of that tournament.

    Qualified for the first time in 1986, winning all three group matches including a 2–0 victory over West Germany. Their best performance is reaching the quarter-finals in 1998.

  22. Switzerland

    Has reached the quarter-finals four times, in 1934, 1938, 1954 and 2026. In 1954 the team hosted the tournament and lost 7–5 to neighboring Austria in the last eight.

    Qualified for the finals seven times: 1974, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026. Reached the round of 16 in 2006, narrowly losing to eventual champions Italy, and again in 2022.

    Has qualified seven times, from 1994, when it reached the round of 16 on its debut, to 2026. Saudi Arabia qualified automatically for 2034 as hosts.

    Five World Cup appearances: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2022 and 2026. In 2010 Ghana reached the quarter-finals, where Uruguay knocked them out.

    Qualified in 1934, as the first Middle Eastern and African team to play in a World Cup, then 1990, 2018 and 2026. In 2026 they beat New Zealand and Australia on penalties in the knockouts.

Who won the 2026 World Cup?

Spain won the 2026 final against Argentina 1–0 after extra time, for its second title and its first since 2010. England finished third and France fourth.

Why is Italy on the list if it did not qualify for 2026?

Italy is a four-time champion, so fans still rank it. It failed to qualify for 2026 after losing a European playoff final to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties.

How should I rank World Cup teams?
